  1. Preheat oven to 350˚F.
  2. Cream together the butter and sugar.
  3. Mix in the eggs, flour and vanilla (and nuts, if desired). Note: the more you whip the dough at this stage, the more easily it spreads in the pan.
  4. Spread 1/2 of the mixture in a greased 13 x 9-inch baking pan.
  5. Cover the layer of dough with pie filling, covering evenly.
  6. Spoon the remaining batter on top.
  7. With clean fingers or a table knife gently spread the dough to cover the pie filling. (Try not to get pie filling smeared across top. Gaps are okay.)
  8. Bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Cool before serving.
Recipe Notes

Martone Classic
I made these for just about every event I ever need to make anything for in high school: Search Weekends, Girl Scout events, friends' parties, etc. Easy, yummy, and you can eat them with a fork or with your hands. They are always called Cherry Squares, even if a different type of pie filling is used.  🙂

(Recipe originally from mom's friend, Sally Fogarty Clark.)
