Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Combine sugar, corn syrup and vinegar in large saucepan.
  2. Cook, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves.
  3. Cover pan for one minute to allow the steam to wash down the sugar crystals that cling to side of pan, or wipe down with damp cloth.
  4. Uncover; insert candy thermometer.
  5. Cook without stirring until 300°F (hard crack stage-when syrup is dropped in very cold water, it separates into hard and brittle threads).
  6. Remove from heat; stir in baking soda.
  7. Pour into a buttered 9x9x2 inch pan. Do not spread, it will sort of spread itself.
  8. Cool in pan on wire rack.
  9. Break cooled sponge into pieces.
  10. Dip pieces into melted chocolate, arrange on cookie sheets and cool until set.

Mom gave me this recipe. Plain, it’s a little baking soda-y, or soapy. I dipped the chunks in melted chocolate chips, and that made it just like what I’ve had in Buffalo. Pretty easy, fun to do, and tasty. I experimented with making a batch with light corn syrup and crushed candy canes and it was HORRIBLE.
