Measure out the buttermilk. If you don't have buttermilk, you can get the same chemical reaction and a similar flavor by mixing plain yogurt or sour cream with enough milk to a buttermilk-like thickness.
Mix the egg and with the buttermilk.
Add buttermilk mixture to dry ingredients.
Stir it in.
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead two to three minutes.
Divide dough in half.
In this case I wanted to make one loaf with currants, so I kneaded in 1/4 cup of currants to one half of the dough.
Shape dough in two round loaves in greased pie tins or cake pans.
Cut a large cross into the top of each.
Bake 35-40 minutes.
Mom would often make this for Saint Patrick's day. Always awesome... like a big, honking biscuit. Make sure they’re baked enough and not doughy in the middle. May take longer than the recommended amount of time.
