  1. Get out your onions. Hope that they have not done this while you weren't looking.
  2. Find a reasonably intact onion. Remove the outer skin and stick cloves into the whole onion. Set aside.
  3. Get yourself a pound of lentils. Easy way? Buy a pound bag of lentils. Hard way? Find three partially full bags of different kinds of lentils and use your (postage) scale to measure out a pound.
  4. In large pot, combine the water and lentils...
  5. ... salt, bay leaf, and the whole onion with cloves.
  6. Simmer 30 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile, combine all remaining ingredients in a crock-pot.
  8. Stir in simmered ingredients from saucepan.
  9. Add additional water if mixture seems dry.
  10. Cover.
  11. Cook on low 6 hours, then check to see if lentils are tender.
  12. Cook longer if necessary.
